Expert Interview - Björn Baumann

Jonas van de Poel · 7 min read

Hi Björn! In short: who are you and what do you do?

Hi, I'm Björn. I help ecommerce brands grow their business with the help of story-based email marketing.

This includes ideating and setting up flows and newsletter campaigns tailored to their overall marketing and traffic strategy.

Which tools do you regularly use in your ecommerce marketing stack?

Which ones are your favorite, and why?

Klaviyo is by far my favorite since it's so much more than just a tool for sending emails. It helps me get a more holistic picture of my clients' businesses, which is essential if you really want to grow a brand.

With Klaviyo, we can not just optimize email marketing itself but also work on sign-up forms, optimize metrics like average order value, and create customer segments.

Since I also run paid traffic for selected clients, another essential tool I am using is the Meta Business Manager. Due to being very buggy, it's not my favorite but essential nonetheless 😉

ChatGPT has been the latest one in my stack. However, I don't use it for writing itself, but rather to generate ideas, crystallize my thoughts by making them more specific, and brainstorm new hooks & angles.

Could you tell us about the most exciting ecommerce project you worked on, recently?

The most exciting one was helping to build up a brand of wooden learning toys for children from scratch.

Within a few months, we were able to generate more than 10,000 paying customers and have since developed and launched multiple additional products which customers loved.

It was (and is) more of a partnership than an actual project with the brand owner since I'm handling all aspects of traffic and marketing and also consult him on business questions, such as pricing, new product ideas, etc.

Which ecommerce messaging trends have you identified this year?

Which ones will be mainstream and which ones will die out in 2023?

I'm a strong believer in focusing on the fundamentals. There are always trends which are coming and going, but understanding the fundamentals of psychology (which, in the end, is messaging) never stops working.

Therefore, the biggest messaging trend I'm focusing on is understanding the customers we are trying to sell to and the transformation our products bring to their lives. Because this will be true and valid in 2023, 2025, 2026, and beyond.

When it comes to messaging channels, email, SMS and WhatsApp / Messenger are key.

Which channels do you use most frequently, and how do you combine them?

For now, I'm mainly focused on working on the email marketing channel for my clients. However, I think it's very powerful to combine and use multiple channels and add SMS and WhatsApp on top of email marketing to reach customers.

Platforms like Klaviyo make it simple. Another channel I hear more and more lately is using direct mail, especially in ecommerce. Direct mail might also be a very interesting addition for businesses especially for those who have already fully utilized the others.

Also direct mail in fields like ecom and done in an innovative way, might further help to stand out from the crowd which is solely focusing on “digital channels.”
